Deborah Marmara'

Deborah started taking pottery lessons at Anna Ciavola’s studio in 1997. There she practised mainly on the wheel and created basic small wheel-thrown pots. During this time Deborah started and finished a Bachelors of Art (Hons.) degree at University in European and Maltese History and History of Art. After that Deborah has started a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (P.G.C.E) to attain one of her other passions which is teaching.

Due to studying Deborah stopped working in ceramics for around 3 to 4 years. Her passion for pottery lay dormant for around three or four years. With the help of some close people who gave her the right push, Deborah started attending pottery lessons again with Julie Apap where she gained more experience and her view to pottery opened up to slabbing, coiling and hand-building besides getting more experience on the wheel. During these years Deborah has learnt a lot both about the clay and its versatility and has also gained a lot of confidence both with the clay itself and with experimentation in glazing.

In 2006 Deborah has attended an ESF course with Mcast under the guidance of George Muscat. This course has strengthened her skill on the wheel. In the same year Deborah has also attended a short evening course at Mcast where under the teaching of George Muscat she has experimented a lot in hand-building.

'Fire'--raku fired

In 2006 Deborah has also attended a Raku Course under the guidance of George Muscat.

Raku has opened a whole new view on glazing and experimentation with glazes. This course has truly been intensive and inspirational. Deborah has also participated in various collective exhibitions with Art Club 2000

.Deborah’s ceramics are often one-off pieces and range from functional small to large wheel-thrown or hand-built vases, bowls, etc. to sculptural bowls and vases and wall pieces.

Most pots are in stoneware and fired at high temperatures.  Earthenware clay is also amply used.

Deborah’s inspirations are her feelings, especially in the wall pieces, and the local sea and landscape. This also shows in the glazes chosen.

A lot of her work includes glass as its brilliant feel gives character to the pots
